Barroso overturns the removal of the Communications Minister’s sister

Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court, authorized the return to office of the mayor of Vitorino Freire (MA), Luanna Rezende, sister of the Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho. She was removed from her position, after being the target of an operation by the Federal Police (PF), at the beginning of this month, against alleged embezzlements at the Companhia de Desenvolvimento dos Vales do São Francisco and Parnaíba.
According to PF investigations, the municipality commanded by Luanna Rezende, would have received R$5 million in parliamentary amendments from Juscelino Filho in 2020, from the so-called “secret budget”, to build a 19-kilometer-long paving that passes through his and his family’s properties. If the suspicions are confirmed, those investigated may be held liable for bidding fraud, money laundering, criminal organization, embezzlement, active corruption and passive corruption.
In the decision, which is confidential, but was released by the EstadãoMinister Barroso mentions that “the measure of precautionary removal from public service fulfilled its purpose and is no longer justified in light of the principle of proportionality. The return of the investigated person to exercise her mandate in the municipal executive was authorized”.
The PF investigation began in 2021 and had two phases carried out last year — Odacro, on July 20, and Odacro II, on October 5. The latest operation investigates the participation of politicians in a scheme of “diversion of parliamentary amendments intended for the asphalt paving of a municipality in Maranhão”.
Juscelino Filho is also being investigated by the PF, but was not the target of this Friday’s (1st) operation. The PF even requested warrants against him, but they were denied by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso. The minister’s defense denies the accusations and said that his entire performance as a parliamentarian and as a minister has been guided by the public interest and serving the population.
