The state of Bahia has 12 of the 50 cities with the most intentional violent deaths last year, according to the Yearbook released this Thursday (20) by the Brazilian Public Security Forum. Of these 12 municipalities, four are the ones that most recorded this type of occurrence across the country, with an average of 82.1 to 88.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

Although the year in general had a drop in the number of intentional violent deaths, of 2.4% compared to 2022 and reached the lowest level since 2011, Bahian cities remain among those that recorded the most deaths such as intentional homicides, robbery, bodily injury followed by death, police intervention and death of police officers.

According to data from the yearbook, Jequié is the most violent municipality in the country among those with more than 100,000 inhabitants, with a rate of 88.8. Following are Santo Antônio de Jesus (88.3), Simões Filho (87.4) and Camaçari (82.1). (see ranking below)

In the state that was governed by Rui Costa (PT) in 2022, and now also has the PT Jerônimo Rodrigues in the Rio Branco Palace, the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) stated that it recorded 5,167 violent deaths in the year, with a drop of 5.9% compared to 2021.

“The SSP also points out that it does not count as murder the occurrences where criminals attack the police and end up not resisting the confrontations”, he explains.

The percentage pointed out by the SSP corresponds to that calculated by the Yearbook, with a drop of 5.9%. However, the number of violent deaths calculated by the Forum is divergent, with 6,659 in 2022. The secretariat says that it considers violent deaths to be the typifications of homicide, robbery and intentional injury followed by death.

The SSP also claims that it has intensified the fight against criminal organizations and arrested 9,000 people (average of 50 per day) in the first half of 2023 alone, with the seizure of 5.5 tons of drugs and 37 rifles. However, it did not comment on 2022 arrests.

The folder also said that it has been investing in the expansion of personnel, with the hiring of just over two thousand new military police and firefighters in 2023, and the forecast of another 4.5 thousand by the end of 2024.

“Finally, with regard to deaths in confrontations, the SSP points out that it has invested in police training and intelligence, always seeking to act in the protection of society. It reinforces that those criminals who attack the security forces will receive a proportionate and legal response,” he added in a statement.
