At COP 28, Amom Mandel presents a complaint about poor air quality in the Amazon

Dubai – At the launch panel of the “Bancada pelo Planeta” campaign, during the 28th Conference of the Parties – COP, this Sunday (3), federal deputy Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM) exposed a complaint about the negligence of the Brazilian State in the face of the collapse of air quality in the Amazon. The document must be delivered to the main international authorities of the United Nations.

The “Bancada pelo Planeta” campaign, an initiative of the Parliamentary Front for Indigenous and Environmentalist Rights of Brazil, proposes discussing what parliament can do to collaborate with the reality of climate change and what the COP can bring in terms of results to defend the Amazon. On the occasion, Mandel highlighted the importance of complying with established human rights, guaranteed to every citizen, and the importance of international cooperation.

“What we hope with this report is that, instead of looking for individual culprits, because we know that there is no single culprit, that other countries and people who care about this issue can come together to prevent this disrespect for human rights , often spoken at conferences like these at the United Nations. May these human rights stop being words written on paper and become something concrete”,

explained.

In his speech, the parliamentarian also highlighted that the document highlights problems committed by all spheres of government, in the face of omissions in action in favor of the environment and in the fight against toxic air inhaled by the population of the Amazon, such as in Amazonas and Pará, in recent months.

“For decades we have lived with the commonplace disregard for human rights, regardless of the management. This negligence occurs in all spheres of power, from the Federal Government, to the State, to the Municipal Government. But recently, as a result of the absence of the Brazilian State in the Amazon Rainforest and the actions of criminal organizations, we faced criminal burnings and forest fires that caused toxic air to reach the largest city in the Amazon,”

declared.

In the document, the deputy proposes that immediate actions be taken, such as a formal request for international support from the Federal Government and that the governments of the states of Amazonas and Pará invest immediately in prevention measures and adaptation strategies to climate change. .

The main objective of the Bench’s agenda is to support the campaigns of parliamentarians and existing global networks. This will be done by publicizing successful initiatives and encouraging the presentation of new projects. The ultimate objective is to push for the goals set by governments over the next two years to be turned into laws.

Furthermore, the Bench will seek to strengthen projects and proposals for COP 30, in partnership with civil society. The objective is to expand its capacity to influence the organizational processes and negotiations of the conference in Belém. Through this partnership, the Bench intends to play a more active role in defining policies and actions related to climate change.
