The Arns Commission, which defends human rights, released a statement calling for the release of two protesters arrested by the Military Police during a protest against the privatization of Sabesp last Wednesday (6).

Hendryll Luiz Rodrigues de Brito Silva and Lucas Borges Carvente, linked to the left-wing party Unidad Popular, participated in a demonstration against the sale of the state-owned company in the Legislative Assembly.

After trying to tear down the structure that separates the galleries from the plenary, the protesters were repressed by the police, who used batons and pepper spray.

“The Arns Commission publicly expresses solidarity with the protesters who were attacked and detained by agents of the São Paulo State Police, later accused of resistance and bodily harm and detained by the São Paulo Judiciary”, says the note.

The entity also says that the arrest is disproportionate and unjustified, considering that the two protesters could respond freely, “since it is a crime with little offensive potential”.

“The Arns Commission expresses its concern with the current penal policy considering the disproportionate measure of maintaining the arrest of Hendryll and Lucas, protesters who suffered attacks in the conflict with Military Police agents”, he declared.
