Appio will be the first heard in inspection at the 13th Court – 05/30/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Judge Eduardo Appio, who was removed last week from the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba, responsible for Operation Lava Jato processes, will be the first person heard in the extraordinary correction of the CNJ (National Council of Justice). The operation was anticipated by the column this Tuesday (30).

Author of one of several correction requests made to the body, the magistrate has already been sought by members of the inspection task force.

Before being removed, Appio was reviewing all the decisions made by former judge Sergio Moro in Lava Jato.

The steps taken by the CNJ, determined by the national justice inspector, Luis Felipe Salomão, will also reach the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region (TRF-4).

The operation will go through a rigorous fine-tooth comb in the work of the 13th Rod and in the offices of the judges of the Eighth Panel of the Court —with access, including, to documents filed in their computers.

The procedure will take place between Wednesday (31) and Friday (2) of this week. In addition to Appio, other people will be summoned to give testimonies about everything that happens in the court and in the TRF-4.

Both the 13th Court of Curitiba and the TRF-4 gained notoriety during Lava Jato by sentencing Lula (PT) twice to 17 years in prison.

The court had a prominent role in Lava Jato because it was up to the Court to review the acts and decisions of Moro, now a senator of União Brasil for the state of Paraná.

During the years of the operation, Moro’s measures in the process that led Lula to prison were unrestrictedly approved by the judges.

In 2018, the TRF-4 analyzed Lula’s appeal and not only upheld the then judge’s decision to condemn him in the Guarujá triplex process, but also increased the penalty, from 9 years and six months in prison to 12 years and one month.

The following year, the Court of the South of the country returned to the load. When analyzing Lula’s appeal in another process, that of the Atibaia site, the TRF-4 also increased this second sentence, from 12 years and 11 months to 17 years, one month and ten days of detention.

In the course of the actions, the judges denied all the requests for suspicion and criminal complaint filed against the then judge made by Lula’s defense.

Last week, the Court returned to the headlines by dismissing Judge Eduardo Appio from the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba. He is accused of calling the son of one of the judges, pretending to be a third person, in order to gain access to his personal data.

The act was understood as a threat. The defense of the judge denies.
