Amazonian archery athlete will compete in World Armed Forces Championship

Manaus (AM) – For the first time an Amazonian participates in the World Armed Forces Championship, Gustavo dos Santos will represent Amazonas in the competition that takes place in February, in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. The indigenous archery athlete has support from the State Government, through the State Sports Grant and the Amazonas Project at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“Gustavo is an outstanding athlete who has followed a brilliant path towards the next Olympic cycle. It is Governor Wilson Lima’s determination that top athletes like him receive all the support to reach national and world levels in their sports”,
said Jorge Oliveira, Secretary of State for Sports and Leisure (Sedel).
Gustavo dos Santos is from the Karapãna ethnic group, and currently holds the position of 3rd sergeant in the Brazilian Air Force, achieving national ranking and classifying himself as the only Amazonian in the world armed forces.
“The most important thing in this competition is to show the strength of Amazonas. I am very happy to go to this World Cup with the best in high performance”,
commented Gustavo dos Santos.
The athlete, who has been a fan of archery for over 10 years, carries out his training at the Vila Olímpica de Manaus. The Amazon native carries important titles such as the 2018 Brazilian Championship, a silver medal at the 2018 South American Games in Bolivia, and 4th place in qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.
“The financial support from the Bolsa Sport Estadual is used to maintain training and expenses for competitions. This incentive that we receive from the state is extremely important to compete at a high level and now I am aiming for the greatest result of reaching the Olympics”,
