The Amazon Fund currently has R$3 billion available for investment in projects, with R$2.2 billion already being studied for release and R$800 million still without requests, said this Thursday (1st) the socio-environmental director of BNDES ( National Bank for Economic and Social Development), Tereza Campello.

At an event to release the fund’s balance sheet, Campello also stated that another R$3.1 billion was announced by new potential donors, of which R$2.4 billion was from the United States alone. However, these amounts must be paid in stages.

Considering the new contracts, in 2023 the fund raised R$726 million.

The executive secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, João Paulo Capobianco, said at the event that the fact that Brazil has made progress in combating deforestation in the biome during the Lula government enables the country to act in the search for new donations.

According to him, several countries have expressed interest in collaborating with the Amazon Fund, expanding the range of donors.

The head of the environmental department, Marina Silva, did not participate in the event because she was diagnosed with Covid-19 this Thursday and canceled her public agenda. “With up-to-date vaccinations and no serious symptoms, she is recovering at home and dispatched remotely,” informed the ministry.

Created in 2008, the Amazon Fund is made up of donations and aims to use resources in projects that enable the preservation of the Amazon forest, seen as fundamental to preventing the most catastrophic effects of climate change.

Norway is today the largest donor, representing 89.9% of the resources already received, followed by Germany (8.4%), Switzerland (0.8%), Petrobras (0.5%) and the United States (0.4%). %). Donations of R$497 million from the United Kingdom and R$80 million from Germany are contracted, but have not yet been deposited and should enter the fund in the coming months, according to BNDES.
