“Amapá had a leading presence at COP 28”, says governor Clécio Luís – News of Brazil

It was during a week of commitments at the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 28), that governor Clécio Luís led the Amapá delegation to show more about the most preserved state in Brazil.
Participation in debates and meetings with authorities from different countries indicated that Amapá is an example in forest management and bioeconomy, acts with sustainable responsibility and protection of the Amazon, and deserves to live a new socioeconomic moment. This scenario has also been outlined in preparation for the edition of COP30, the Amazon COP, which will be held in Belém, in 2025.
The Amapá delegation, led by the governor, was made up of representatives from the departments of Environment, Indigenous Peoples, International Relations and Foreign Trade, Science and Technology, Culture and Communication, who demonstrated strategies for conserving the standing forest as an inducer of development economic, as well as projects open to cooperation.
“We demonstrate that every debate held about the Amazon will also pass through our state, because we no longer accept discussions about us, without our participation. We do want compensatory measures to keep the forest standing, but not only that, we also want to have the right to develop and generate jobs, generate income and foreign exchange for our state”, said governor Clécio Luís.
Throughout the dialogues, the Government consolidated that Amapá will be important at COP 30, in Belém, because it can host events in the Metropolitan Region of Macapá before and during the 2025 Conference.
The Amapá group also included the president of the Court of Justice of Amapá (Tjap), judge Adão Carvalho; the president of the Sebrae Deliberative Council, Josiel Alcolumbre; state deputies Rodolfo Vale and Edna Auzier; and entrepreneurs.
The participation of the Judiciary, the Legislature and the private sector enriched the negotiations and highlighted the joint commitment to a future with more sustainability and dignity.
“With the Amazon COP, we want two legacies. One of them is economic development, because we did our homework, we have the best environmental indicators, and we want the best social and economic indicators for our people. The other legacy is that, like Belém, we asked for resources for urban, hotel and tourist infrastructure to prepare Amapá to also receive participants. Showing great cohesion with the Justice, the Legislature and Sebrae, Amapá had an important presence at this COP in the United Arab Emirates and continues to prepare for the COP in the Amazon”, highlighted Clécio.
The delegation met with representatives from countries such as Norway, Finland and China, in a dialogue for cooperation; and also dealt with investments with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).
In the commitments, Amapá presented preservation initiatives based on sustainable bioeconomy, which combines the standing forest and the development of the economy and income for the community, with responsible and innovative environmental practices. The public learned about successful projects such as the “Amapá Seal” and sustainable forest management, an effective method in forest management.
Aspects of bioeconomy in the economic development of the Amazon region, combating global warming, reducing the use of fossil fuels and agri-food systems were addressed.
The conference, which is an annual meeting between member countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, takes place until Tuesday, 12th, in the United Arab Emirates. The Amapá delegation continues to follow the debates at COP 28, with the aim of obtaining international support for new models of economic development for the Amazon, as well as contributing to solutions to contain global warming.
COP 28 comes after the sixth assessment cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which reinforced the sense of urgency and severity of climate change, as well as disruptive consequences for ecological and socioeconomic systems.
