The Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicanos-SP) plans to send a bill to the Assembly in 2023 to regulate and restructure the Penal Police in the state, the body responsible for the security of the prison system.
The measures have been demanded more intensely by criminal police officers since June, when the governor granted an increase in the salaries of civil and military police officers, but not for them.
In October, they released a letter addressed to Tarcísio with requests for career regulation, salary enhancement and an increase in the number of employees. They also went so far as to signal standard operations (partial provision of services) in state penitentiaries.
The project that will be sent by the governor to the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo intends to attack these points. The Criminal Police was created in June 2022 in São Paulo, but has not yet been regulated.
The project must propose the unification of the careers of prison security agents and prison escort and surveillance agents and also include a salary adjustment. The text will have to be approved by state deputies.
Arthur Lima, secretary of the Civil House, states that the Tarcísio government pays special attention to Public Security and that the project’s goal is to promote the professional development of the category.
Survey carried out by Sheet in March it showed that the São Paulo Penal Police has 29,241 employees, in addition to 3,292 employees in administrative sectors. In absolute numbers, the entire Civil Police totals 26,350 police officers, data from the end of last year.
Until December, the PM registered the lowest number of personnel of this century, with 80,137 men and women, which represents a reduction of more than 10 thousand agents from the existing staff in 2006.
