Senator Omar Aziz (PSD) and federal deputy Saullo Vianna (União) criticized Flávio’s speeches against ZFM

Manaus (AM) – The Manaus Free Trade Zone (ZFM) gained prominence this week during the vote on Tax Reform in the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) of the Federal Senate, following criticism made by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) due to the advantages of the model preserved by the approved proposal.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s speech occurred after the reform’s rapporteur, senator Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM), rejected an amendment authored by the senator, aimed at the distribution of oil royalties, which would benefit the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The attack on ZFM generated reactions from Amazonian parliamentarians. Still during the vote, senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) said it was a historic moment for the Senate, regardless of opposing positions.

“It is natural that in an issue as complex as this, there is disagreement, but, in no way, can we say that with this tax reform it will get worse than it already is. This is speech for those who are opportunists, who are after votes and who are not after resolving the problems that the country faces,” he stated in response to Flávio Bolsonaro’s speech.

In a post on social media, federal deputy Saullo Vianna (Union) also spoke out, stating that the criticism is uninformed, ignorant and a serious error.

“ZFM is a pillar of the development of Amazonas and Brazil, generating jobs, boosting the economy and contributing to the preservation of the environment. The senator should do his homework before making statements like this. In the Tax Reform, the Free Zone must be protected and valued”, he pointed out.

During the session, the parliamentarian stated that the Free Zone could cause losses at a national level, causing unemployment. Furthermore, he said there is unequal treatment between Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro, due to the state of Rio de Janeiro having a greater number of state deputies and being unable to approve the proposal.

“Manaus has to be the new Silicon Valley, and the rest of Brazil, an Argentina, as industries across the country go to the Manaus Free Trade Zone because of the low production cost or will be encouraged to acquire raw materials in the Amazon. This could cause unemployment throughout Brazil, except in Amazonas”, she joked.

The basic text of the proposal was approved by 20 votes against 6, including that of Flávio Bolsonaro.

Meeting with Lula

Senator Eduardo Braga strategically participated with President Lula (PT), at the beginning of the week, at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília. During the meeting, economic issues relevant to Brazil and Amazonas were discussed, such as the vote on Tax Reform in the National Congress.

“Lula has shown himself to be very friendly to the State, concerned about our people due to the severe drought and fires. We are aligned with the search for the best quality of life for Amazonians and we will not stop”,

said after the meeting.
