President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) recorded a video this Wednesday (13), in reference to the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Federal Territory of Amapá (TFA). Alongside the only Amapá native in his ministry, former governor Waldez Góes, Lula promised to complete the paving of BR-156 by the end of his term.
It is the oldest federal highway under construction in the country, and is also the subject of a cooperation agreement between Brazil and France, initiated during the governments of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Jacques Chirac, in 1997, and which was ratified by Lula himself when side of Nicolas Sarkozy, in 2008. Under the agreement, Brazil and France would share the cost of building a binational bridge over the Oiapoque River and the two countries assumed the commitment of the road connection.
The bridge was completed in 2011, but only opened to car traffic in 2017. France opened a road between the cities of Régina and Saint Georges, connecting the capital Cayenne by land to the Brazilian border, but on the Brazilian side the BR-156 highway was never completed.
