The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), told people close to him this Wednesday (14) that the tendency today is to participate in the act called by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), even though he did not bring down the gavel.

The former president is the target of an investigation by the Federal Police for his participation in an alleged coup plot to keep him in the Presidency. Bolsonaro scheduled the event for February 25, on Avenida Paulista, and stated that he intends to defend himself against the accusations that have been made against him.

If he is prosecuted and convicted of the crimes of attempted coup d’état, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law and criminal association, he could face a sentence of up to 23 years in prison and be ineligible for more than 30 years.

Emedebista’s allies try to convince him that the damage to his image could be great if he participated in the protest. Nunes has sought to present himself as a city administrator, leaving ideological disputes in the background.

The idea of his campaign is to avoid political polarization with Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who will have the support of President Lula (PT), and to showcase projects and works delivered by São Paulo City Hall in recent years.

The presence at Bolsonaro’s demonstration could tighten the link between Nunes’ image and that of the former president, complicating the strategy of distanced support that the mayor is trying to establish, say Emedebista allies who maintain participation in federal management.

According to them, the photograph or filming of the former president with Nunes in an act in which Bolsonaro tries to oppose the investigation into his alleged articulation of a coup plot would be the ideal record for his competitors to exploit in the election.

Furthermore, his participation can be seen as an endorsement of the crimes that have been attributed to the former president. Finally, you can associate it with anti-democratic speeches that are sung by Bolsonaro or some other participant at the event.

Going to the event could also cause shock within Nunes’ party base, these allies consider. The emedebista management has, for example, several toucans, who could hand over their positions in the event of an explicit gesture of support for Bolsonaro.

The mayor is also trying to attract the PSDB itself to his party alliance, which could become unfeasible in this context.

The mayor’s fear, on the other hand, is that his absence will irritate Bolsonaro, who could then withdraw his support and launch a competitor aligned with Bolsonaroism, thus casting a shadow on his chances of re-election.

Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) stated that he will attend the event. The governor of São Paulo is considered one of the mayor’s most important campaigners, which makes the decision not to participate in the protest more difficult for Nunes.

“It’s a peaceful demonstration in favor of [ex-] president, and I will be by his side, as I always have been,” the governor told CNN.
