AGU wants to evaluate agreements signed with Braskem – 12/12/2023 – Panel

The AGU (Attorney General of the Union) wants to evaluate the agreements already signed in the Braskem case to analyze whether the proposals encompass effective and comprehensive reparation for the damage caused by the collapse of a company mine that caused effects in Maceió, capital of Alagoas.

Members of the agency were in the city this Tuesday (12) to analyze the measures already adopted by the Public Authorities and talk to those involved. The AGU indicated that the Union will seek compensation for the damage caused to its property and also reimbursement for the amounts spent on the subsidence of the soil in the city.

The announcement comes amid an impasse between the state government and the city of Maceió over a R$1.7 billion agreement signed by the municipal administration with Braskem.

The governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB), defends a renegotiation of the agreement signed by Maceió City Hall with Braskem, to include victims, the government and 12 other cities in the metropolitan region that would be affected by the mine collapse. The state also understands that the value should be in the order of R$30 billion, well above the R$1.7 billion agreed with the company.

The city of Maceió, led by João Henrique Caldas, JHC (PL), argues that the value is the result of negotiations with the mining company and involves compensation for assets and tax revenue lost by Maceió due to the damage caused.

Furthermore, the municipality states that the state government, other municipalities and victims can negotiate their compensation with Braskem — as long as they prove that there was a loss.
