The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appointed economist Marcos Perioto to the position of Secretary of Labor Relations at the Ministry of Labor, a portfolio headed by Luiz Marinho.
Perioto was a nomination from Força Sindical, which is chaired by Miguel Torres and has ex-federal deputy Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP) as its best known member.
The secretariat aims to propose policies, projects and programs in the field of labor relations. In the function, Perioto should be a constant interlocutor of categories of workers and employers.
For the coming years, the trade union centrals have as a priority the strengthening of collective bargaining instruments, the creation of mechanisms for financing trade unions and the advancement of a proposal for trade union reform.
The Lula government is going through wear and tear with part of the trade union centrals since it announced that the minimum wage will be R$ 1,320 starting in May. As the Panel showed, CUT and Força Sindical leaders saw the value as insufficient and criticized the lack of dialogue with union members on the subject.
