After acquittal, Moro says the trial was “impeccable” and defends “pacification”

After being acquitted by the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR), senator Sergio Moro (União-PR) stated that the trial was “technical and impeccable” and defended “institutional pacification”. He was the target of two Judicial Electoral Investigation Actions (Aijes) that requested the revocation of his mandate. Despite the favorable decision, Moro will still face appeals at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

“There is a judge in Curitiba, the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná, in a technical and impeccable judgment, rejected the actions that sought the revocation of the senator’s mandate that was granted to me by the population of Paraná”, said the parliamentarian alongside his wife, the federal deputy Rosangela Moro (União-SP), on Tuesday night (9).

The senator stated that TRE-PR “represents a beacon for the independence of the judiciary in the face of political power”. The score was five votes to two for the rejection of the actions filed by the Brazilian Federation of Hope (which brings together PT, PCdoB and PV) and the PL that accused Moro of abuse of economic power in the 2022 elections.

“Judges, as long as they are independent and subject only to the law, are the guarantee of freedom”, emphasized Moro, who is a former Lava Jato judge. He highlighted that TRE-PR “preserved popular sovereignty and honored the votes of almost 2 million people from Paraná”.

“I have always had a clear conscience regarding what was done in my electoral campaign. We strictly followed the rules, expenses were all recorded. adversaries artificially inflated them and insistently invoked abuse of economic power,” she said.

Moro points out retaliation against Lava Jato

The former judge pointed out that his opponents “wanted to create new rules for the pre-campaign phase and apply them retroactively to arbitrarily revoke mandates”. For Moro, the actions would be “retaliation” against Lava Jato.

“Basically, it is nothing more than opportunism mixed with retaliation against the fight against corruption carried out in the Lava Jato operation. The Court gave a firm response against this absurd claim”, he highlighted.

The senator stated that “there is still a way to go”, but said he hoped that “the solidity of this trial will serve as a brake on the absurd persecution” that he and his family have suffered since the beginning of this term.

Institutional pacification

During the speech, Moro defended “institutional pacification” and highlighted that “there are no enemies in a democracy, only adversaries”.

“In the Senate I have contact with the support of my peers. Today’s judgment is also an encouragement to them, as it represents the affirmation that the political opposition has the right to exist, which is a condition for the survival of democracy itself,” he said.

“I hope that they, my peers, are also successful in their respective trials. It is time for institutional pacification and respect for Congress. There are no enemies in a democracy, only adversaries”, he added.
