Affonso Celso Pastore dies, aged 84 – 02/21/2024 – Market

Economist and former president of the BC (Central Bank) Affonso Celso Pastore died this Wednesday (21), aged 84. He was admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) over the weekend for surgery.

The wake will be held at the Morumbi cemetery this afternoon, between 1pm and 5pm.

With a bachelor’s and doctorate in economics from USP (University of São Paulo), Pastore was one of the most respected economists in the country. He dedicated himself to public and academic life, having taught at colleges such as Insper and FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas), in addition to the university that trained him.

His main contribution was leading the BC between 1983 and 1985, the last president of the authority during the period of the military dictatorship. At the time, replacing Carlos Langoni, Pastore had the challenge of renegotiating the country’s international obligations in the midst of the external debt crisis.

Born on June 19, 1939, in São Paulo, Pastore came from a family of Italian origin. He had no doubts about the professional path he had taken: “I always thought about being an economist. It wasn’t even a choice, it was something natural”, he said in an interview for the BC memoirs, in 2016.

He graduated in 1962 and completed his doctorate seven years later, with the thesis “The response of agricultural production to prices in Brazil”. The work, which showed how agriculture responded to prices like any other sector, “was of enormous importance”, assesses economist Marcos Lisboa, columnist for Sheet.

“Affonso is part of a generation that followed scientific research and sought to understand what the data had to say about reality,” he said, in a message of condolence. “After [do doutorado] He migrated to macroeconomics, always with the same care in analyzing data, something he has done his entire life.
