Growth

Analysis evaluated data from January 21st to 27th and the previous six weeks

Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) due to covid-19 are showing an upward trend in states in the North and Northeast, reports the latest InfoGripe bulletin from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The movement continues in the opposite direction to the rest of the Center-South, a region where the trend is downward.

The analysis is based on data from the week of January 21st to 27th and the previous six weeks, entered until January 29th in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep-Gripe).

Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome are those in which patients present more acute respiratory symptoms during infections and serve as a parameter to monitor the incidence of viruses and bacteria that attack the respiratory system, such as SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza.

Late rise

The researcher at Fiocruz’s Scientific Computing Program (Procc/Fiocruz) and coordinator of InfoGripe, Marcelo Gomes, explains that the North took longer to be affected by the growth of Covid-19 that occurred in the second half of 2023 in the rest of the country. “The increase started in the Center-South and affected the Northeast at the end of last year, reaching the North only now at the turn of the year”, observed Gomes.

The bulletin points to the growth of SARS due to Covid-19 in Amapá, Mato Grosso, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Sergipe and Tocantins. In Alagoas and Rio Grande do Norte, there is an interruption in the growth trend.

Children and elderly

According to Fiocruz, in the last eight weeks, the incidence and mortality from Covid-19 has had a greater impact on children up to 2 years of age and the population over 65 years of age.

“While the incidence of SARS has a higher impact on children up to two years of age, in terms of mortality we have the opposite, with the population over 65 years of age being the most impacted”,

says Gomes.

This year, 4,240 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome have been recorded and 35% were caused by a respiratory virus. Among these viral cases, two-thirds are the result of SARS-CoV-2 infections.
