Lawyer Benedito Antonio Dias da Silva was excluded from the legal group Prerogativas this Wednesday (3) after being accused of making sexist comments about the relationship between PT president, Gleisi Hoffmann, and her boyfriend, federal deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT -RJ).

Known as Benê, he spoke out on the group’s WhatsApp when referring to an interview by Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance) with the newspaper O Globo.

In the interview, the minister complained about the PT’s attitude towards economic management, which generated responses from Gleisi and Lindbergh.

By criticizing Gleisi and mentioning that her opinions always coincided with those of her boyfriend, the lawyer generated a reaction from women in the group. They saw an insinuation that the leader would not have her own opinions and would be influenced by her partner. There was an exchange of barbs, which culminated in Silva leaving the group.

A former member of the board of the São Paulo OAB and former member of the national entity’s human rights council, the lawyer also presided over the local section in Tatuí (SP), a city where he has been practicing law for more than five decades.

To the Panel, he denied sexism. “I just said that they are always in tune. Gleisi and Lindbergh are a monolithic couple, what she thinks he thinks too. That’s a fact,” he said.

“But today we live in a climate in which the themes of feminism and machismo create discomfort in any discussion,” he stated. Silva says that, with the internal reaction in the group, he agreed that the best thing would be to leave.

Coordinator of Prerogativas, lawyer Marco Aurélio Carvalho stated that the lawyer’s exclusion was a decision compatible with the group’s principles.

“It was a banal and isolated episode, but we understood that an immediate decision was necessary, which strengthens our commitment to a more just and gender-equal society,” he said.
