PM occupies City of God and removes 5 tons of barricades installed by drug traffickers

The Military Police of Rio de Janeiro occupied Cidade de Deus, in the West Zone of the capital, this Wednesday (3). The State Secretariat for the Military Police reported that the operation began early in the morning and will last 24 hours. The objective of the action is to remove barricades installed by criminals to make it difficult for security agents to enter the community, seize stolen or cloned cars and combat crimes.

“Five tons of barricades, so far, have been removed from the streets of the Cidade de Deus community”, said the PM in the social network this afternoon. The occupation is carried out by members of the 18th Military Police Battalion (Jacarepaguá), with support from the Special Rescue and Rescue Actions Group (Gesar) and the Dog Action Battalion (BAC), informed the Brazil Agency.

“The command of the 18th BPM began, this morning (3), an exceptional operation in Cidade de Deus, in Jacarepaguá, a community used as a base by a criminal group to commit a series of crimes. The action has support from other units. Policing in the region is reinforced,” said the PM on social media.

According to experts interviewed by People’s Gazette, among the impacts of the restrictions imposed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on security force operations in Rio de Janeiro is the strengthening of the positions of drug trafficking leaders, mainly through the installation of hundreds of barricades to prevent the advance of vehicles; increase in war arsenals and even alliances with drug traffickers from other states.

The Allegation of Non-compliance with Fundamental Precept (ADPF) 635 generated progressive limitations on the actions of police forces from June 2020.

In this Wednesday’s operation, BAC police officers seized around 70 kilos of marijuana in the community, in the location known as Caminho do Outeiro. The PM reported that a drug trafficking scout was arrested while monitoring and passing on information to the criminal group responsible for organized crime in Cidade de Deus.

“He monitored the action of military police officers who are working today within the community,” said the corporation, which released the image of the radio communicator seized from the scout, who, according to the secretariat, was arrested in Travessa do Sal, in the town of Novo World.
