A survey carried out by Associação Nova Escola on inclusive education in public and private schools in Brazil pointed out that only 3 out of 10 students with disabilities effectively participate in classes. The survey was carried out with 4,745 educators throughout Brazil, during the month of May this year, with results released last week.
According to the survey, half of the educators say that the school structure is inadequate to carry out inclusive education in an appropriate way; and 40% of education professionals say they have not received specialized guidance to assist students with special needs. Another difficulty presented by the educators was the lack of specialized care after regular classes, a reality pointed out by 40% of the teachers.
In addition, 8 out of 10 of those interviewed claim that there is prejudice against students with disabilities and that the main agents of this discrimination are their schoolmates (58%) and their families (32%). More than 90% of the teachers surveyed work with students with disabilities.
The survey heard teachers, directors, coordinators and education professionals from public and private, municipal, state and federal networks, who work in central and peripheral urban areas, as well as in rural and riverside regions, in basic education and higher education.
