From Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, Gianni Infatino, president of FIFA, spoke about the expectations surrounding the 2026 World Cup. He participated, remotely, in the FII Priority summit. The event, which takes place in Miami, in the United States, brings together global leaders and discusses a wide range of topics, including sport.

Excited about the competition that will be held jointly by Canada, the United States and Mexico, Infantino shared a little about what is being done to make the event unforgettable. The idea is to explore as many participating countries as possible to attract an even larger audience.

“We are working to make the 2026 World Cup the biggest event that everyone has ever seen. We know that in America the biggest event is the Superbowl, everyone loves it. But expectations are high for the coming years. An example is the numbers of the latest edition. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, we attracted more than 5 billion spectators around the world. In a game like Argentina and Saudi Arabia we had a demand to watch the game in the stadium with 2.5 million fans. Therefore, in 2026, we want to increase these numbers, because we will have 48 participating teams”.

As a form of comparison, the FIFA president recalled the edition of the World Cup that was held in the United States in 1994. He commented that, at the time, only 9% of the North American population had some type of connection with football, but Today the scenario is very different.

“Now we have almost 90% of Americans involved in football. We have a strong league here, the MLS, as well as women’s football in the country, which is a powerhouse and continues to evolve. Furthermore, we are bringing several competitions to the United States to strengthen this bond, such as the Club World Cup that will be held in 2025 here.”, highlights Infantino.

Asked about the legacy left to the host country, Infatino highlighted that the benefits are great and that an event, like a World Cup, has the power to cause a truly real impact, not limited to just organizational or “expertise”, but rather to increasingly make football the number one sport around the world.

“Our investment is in happiness, we want to see people living well and with longevity. FIFA is a provider of this happiness for the whole world”concluded the president of the entity.
