Zema posts linking democracy to tyranny – 07/23/2023 – Politics

The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), published this Sunday (23) a phrase on a social network linking democracy with the choice of tyrants.

The initiative comes three weeks after the governor shared, also on the networks, a statement attributed to the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, which led the politician to give explanations about the attitude.

This Sunday, Zema posted on his Instagram profile: “Democracy is the right of people to choose their own tyrant. James Madison”.

And he added: “Good morning.”

Madison was one of the first presidents of the United States in the 19th century.

On the last 12th, justifying the publication attributed to Mussolini, Zema said in an interview with GloboNews: “Those who follow me on social networks know that I publish phrases early in the morning and at night. I really like phrases and thoughts”.

At the time, he said he cited the Italian dictator as “a warning” about the risks of a bloated state. The quote attributed to Mussolini was: “We were the first to assert that the more complex civilization becomes, the more the freedom of the individual must be restricted.”

The Minas Gerais governor has been criticized this year for statements, such as an assertion that the Lula government may have turned a “blind eye” to the January 8 attacks to place itself as a victim. He also made a gaffe when he questioned whether the writer Adélia Prado was an employee of a radio station.

Zema, who was re-elected in 2022, is one of those tipped to run for the Presidency of the Republic in the 2026 election, given the condemnation of the ineligibility of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), with whom he was an ally.
