Zema and União Brasil meet to discuss 2026 – 05/07/2023 – Panel

Governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo) met with leaders of the União Brasil on Tuesday (4), in Brasília, to discuss the electoral scenario for 2026, when he could be a candidate for the Presidency.

With the declaration of ineligibility by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Zema was quoted as a representative of the right, as well as Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), Ratinho Júnior (PSD-PR) and Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil-GO).

The meeting took place at the home of Antonio Rueda, national vice-president of União Brasil, and was also attended by ACM Neto, former federal deputy Marcelo Aro (MG) and the mayor of Salvador, Bruno Reis, all from the party.

In the conversation, one of the points emphasized was the need to unify the right-wing parties around a single name, which could be that of Zema.

According to the Minas Gerais governor’s interlocutors, he has no intention of making any move to change parties at this time.

Regarding Tarcísio, members of the União Brasil leadership have said that he has shown difficulty in dealing with the political world, and, therefore, may be left behind in the selection process for 2026.

The reason for this reading is the impasse that the governor has been going through with União Brasil in São Paulo. Party leaders in the state claim that, in 2022, Tarcísio promised them control of CDHU (Urban Housing Development Company) if the Union supported him in the second round, which it did. However, according to them, today the party would not be contemplated.

The governor, in turn, has shown discomfort with the situation. He has been telling allies that he will not give in to pressure like that of União Brasil and that he intends to block the political allotment of the state administration.

União Brasil currently commands three ministries in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and is waiting for a change in Tourism in the coming days, a portfolio that will leave Daniela Carneiro and join Celso Sabino.
