Zanin suspends Rio PM contest due to restrictions for women

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Cristiano Zanin suspended this Monday (23) the public competition for the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) filed a lawsuit against the reservation of 10% of places for women in the competition, the tests for which were administered in August. In the action, the PGR questioned state Law 2,108/1993, which assigns the Secretary of State for the Military Police to set the percentage of inclusion of women, “according to the needs of the corporation”.
With the precautionary decision, the training course for soldiers approved in the first phase of the competition, the application of a new objective test and the publication of any results are suspended until the Supreme Court’s final decision. In the minister’s understanding, women must compete among all available vacancies, informed the Brazil Agency. “The 10% percentage reserved for female candidates appears to contravene constitutional dictates regarding gender equality,” Zanin decided.
In August, governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, informed that he had decided to cancel the objective test of the competition due to allegations of fraud. The new tests were scheduled for next month.
In the decision, the minister mentioned that “in addition to the reduced percentage of 10% of vacancies allocated to female candidates, the objective test of the contest, applied on August 27, 2023, was annulled, as a result of news of fraud, being informed by the same Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in a publication made on a social network, that new objective evidence of the competition will be reapplied at a later date, indicating the possibility of an unreasonable risk to the useful result of the process”.
The discussion about limiting the participation of women in military competitions began after Cristiano Zanin suspended, last month, the Federal District Military Police competition. The measure was taken after the PT sued the Court to challenge a local law that set a limit of 10% for women’s participation in the corporation’s workforce.
