Bolsonaro publishes video from 2023 saying it is from 2022 to attack Lula for drought in the Northeast – 10/24/2023 – Panel

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) published a video on his social networks with false information to criticize the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government regarding an alleged drought in sections of the São Francisco River crossing.

The material shows a man diving in a canal in Barbalha (400 km from Fortaleza), in Ceará, and says in caption that the recording was made in March 2022, during the Bolsonaro government. The idea is to show water abundance.

However, the filming was carried out in May 2023, already under the PT administration.

A second video, presented shortly after the first, shows images of a dry canal and identifies them as if they were from the same place, in Ceará. The idea is to show a lack of water.

However, the protagonist of the video and resident of the region, Rodrigo de Oliveira, 45, tells the Panel that the channel he dived into in May is now even more crowded due to the September rains in the region.

The author of the original video that shows André diving and which was manipulated by Bolsonaro is André do Cariri, 29, a YouTuber who is the creator of the channel Jeito Nordestino.

He says he was in the city of Barbalha to record the cutting of the tree whose trunk is displayed at the traditional Festa do Pau da Bandeira and then filmed Oliveira entering the canal called Cinturão das Águas, in Ceará.

The video published by Bolsonaro even has a white stripe that hides the credit of Jeito Nordestino.

Daniela Alexandre, 27, Oliveira’s wife, also tells the column that, contrary to what the video shared by the former president states, the channel today has more water than at the time of recording, in May.

“I live a minute away from the canal, on a motorbike. Today there are even fish, people go fishing there, it’s very deep. They even banned diving after some people drowned there. The level has been very high in recent months”, says Daniela.

Federal deputy Pedro Campos (PSB-PE), coordinator of the Parliamentary Front in Defense of the Northeast, says he is not surprised by Bolsonaro’s use of false information to talk about the transposition.

“Misinformation on this topic is recurrent in Bolsonarism. Luckily, the people who live on the banks of the canal know the truth and showed this at the polls”, says the parliamentarian.
