Lawyer Cristiano Zanin was appointed minister of the STF (Federal Supreme Court). The decree signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was published in the edition of the Official Gazette this Wednesday (5).

Zanin takes over the vacancy in April with the retirement of Ricardo Lewandowski. The inauguration of the new minister was scheduled for the 3rd of August.

President Lula’s lawyer in the Lava Jato processes, Zanin had his name endorsed by the Senate by 58 votes to 18 on June 21st.

Lula confirmed the nomination of Zanin —his personal friend— to the Supreme Court on June 1st. The lawyer may remain at the STF until November 2050.

Before approval by the Senate plenary, Zanin went through a sabbatical at the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the House, where his name was also approved, by 21 votes to 5.

The meeting went smoothly and with praise for the lawyer, including senators who are critical of Lula, with positive mentions especially of Zanin’s guarantor profile — that is, who reinforces the right to full defense of the accused and investigated.

Lula’s choice was the subject of questions that it could represent a violation of the principle of impersonality.

In the debate held in the second round of 2022 by Sheet, UOL, Band and TV Cultura, Lula said that he would not change the composition of the STF to make it easier for possible legal challenges. “It is not prudent, it is not democratic for a President of the Republic to want to have the ministers of the Supreme Court as friends,” he said at the time. “I think the Supreme Court has to be chosen for competence, for curriculum, and not for friendship.”

Zanin managed to gain the sympathy of current STF ministers and a large number of politicians, including those linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), after becoming famous for questioning Lava Jato.
