Yanomamis: STF already has evidence against Bolsonaro government – 01/26/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) already has information indicating that the non-compliance with court decisions by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has aggravated the humanitarian crisis experienced by the Yanomami.

The evidence calls into question the defense presented by the former president last week. Through a social network, Bolsonaro said that indigenous health was one of the priorities of his government and that the criticisms leveled against him would be “another farce from the left”.

Since 2020, the superior court has issued several decisions in favor of the original peoples – many of them, ordering measures by the government and federal bodies. The determinations were taken within the scope of an action reported by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso and endorsed by the plenary of the STF.

The magistrate himself even addressed the issue, at various times, with the then ministers Marcelo Queiroga (Health) and Walter Braga Netto (Defense) and with the then Advocate General of the Union, Bruno Bianco. All assured Barroso that they were committed to adopting public policies.

Although the management of the former representative has said that he carried out health and food and nutritional surveillance actions among the Yanomami people, information gathered by the STF indicates that the measures did not follow the approved plan and were, above all, deficient.

A region with 30,000 inhabitants in Roraima, the Yanomami Indigenous Land is experiencing an explosion in cases of malaria, incidence of easily preventable worms, respiratory infections and worsening malnutrition, especially among children and the elderly.

The lack of health care in the territory is aggravated by the permanence of more than 20,000 prospectors invading the demarcated area.

Last week, the Ministry of Health declared a Public Health Emergency of National Importance. Three days later, he sent a team from the National Force of the SUS (Unified Health System) to Boa Vista with 12 professionals.

On Tuesday (24), representatives of the Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (Apib) met with the team of minister Luís Roberto Barroso, to demand the removal of illegal miners from Yanomami territory.

In addition to the withdrawal of invaders, they asked for the release of extraordinary funds to guarantee the carrying out of operations in the indigenous land.
