One day after Brazilian Vinicius Junior suffered racist abuse in Spanish football, the Superior Sports Council, the State Secretariat for Sport and the Ministry of Culture and Sport released a statement repudiating violence in football. The three bodies are part of the government of the country.
The text was endorsed by the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, on Twitter. Neither the statement nor the politician named the attacker by name.
“Zero tolerance for racism in football. The sport is founded on the values of tolerance and respect. Hate and xenophobia must have no place in our football or in our society,” Sánchez wrote.
Last Sunday (21), the striker was the target of racial insults in the match between Valencia and Real Madrid, played at the Mestalla stadium. He even pointed at one of the attackers. In confusion at the end of the game, Vinicius Junior was still expelled.
In the statement, the government “strongly” condemns the racist insults that have been taking place in football.
“The xenophobia shown by some energetic people shames us as a society (…) Violence, racism and any type of discrimination are the antithesis of the values of sport, which are precisely those of respect, empathy and team spirit”, says the text .
The statement does not propose any concrete solution to combat racism, other than promoting, together with the Spanish Federation and LaLiga (the entity that organizes the national tournament), an awareness campaign aimed at fans.
Valencia announced this Monday (22) to have identified one of the fans who insulted the Brazilian.
