It will be the first time that Geraldo Alckmin will be in charge of Brazil
Vice President Geraldo Alckmin assumes, this Sunday night (22), the presidency of the Republic for the first time. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will travel to Argentina, where he will meet President Alberto Fernández, on Monday (23), and will participate in a meeting of Latin American and Caribbean leaders on Tuesday.
Current holder of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Alckmin ran for the Planalto Palace in 2006 and 2018, but was defeated in both attempts.
Previously affiliated with the PSDB, Alckmin accepted to be vice-president on Lula’s PT ticket, in a maneuver that surprised everyone. In recent decades, the two politicians have been on opposite sides.
A doctor and born in the interior of São Paulo, Alckmin is one of the founders of the PSDB. He was governor of São Paulo four times, vice-governor, federal deputy, state deputy, mayor of Pindamonhangaba and councilor.
