Manaus (AM) — In a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), this Thursday (29), in Brasília, governor Wilson Lima received the signal that Amazonas is close to becoming a state completely free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination.
Currently, 14 municipalities already have international certification as a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination.
According to Wilson Lima, the State Government has been working to meet Brazil’s goal of becoming completely free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by 2026. At the meeting, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, announced that, after technical analyses, Amazonas is on the right track to completely suspend foot-and-mouth disease vaccination.
“We have just received very important news from Minister Fávaro and his entire team that, after the analysis carried out, the technical analysis, there is already a positive sign that this will happen throughout the state and Amazonas will be free from foot-and-mouth disease vaccination , ensuring free transit for our livestock farmers and that Amazonas is not isolated from the rest of the states in the region and also from Brazil”,
highlighted Wilson Lima.
The governor was received by minister Carlos Fávaro, by the assistant secretary of Agricultural Defense, Allan Alvarenga, and Bruno Cotta, from the general coordination of Traffic, Quarantine and Animal Certification.
The meeting was attended by the state secretaries of Rural Production, Daniel Borges; and of Federative and International Relations, Inês Carolina Simonetti; and the vice-president of the Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA) and president of the Agriculture and Livestock Federation (FAEA), Munir Lourenço.
“There were more than five decades of intense technical efforts and investments by the Federal Government, the State Government, and by us in the private sector. It is certainly a big step and opens new horizons, including for the entire primary sector, for the state’s livestock farming and with the governor’s efforts to internalize the economy”,
said Munir Lourenço.
Currently, the municipalities of Apuí, Boca do Acre, Canutama, Eirunepé, Envira, Guajará, Humaitá, Itamarati, Ipixuna, Lábrea, Manicoré, Novo Aripuanã, Pauini and part from Tapauá. Therefore, producers in these cities no longer need to vaccinate their herd.
The request for international recognition of a vaccination-free zone is scheduled to be presented by the Brazilian government to the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) in August 2024. In order to achieve recognition, the Organization requires the suspension of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease and the ban on the entry of vaccinated animals into the proposed states and regions for at least 12 months.

Governor Wilson Lima reinforced the State Government’s commitment to licensing the exploration of potash in the municipality of Autazes (112 kilometers from the capital), fulfilling the conditions for environmental preservation. From production, Brazil will reduce its dependence on imports of potassium chloride, used mainly in agriculture.
