Wilson Lima participates in the 13th Annual Meeting of the Task Force for Climate and Forests

Manaus (AM) – The Government of Amazonas will participate, starting this Tuesday (7), in the 13th Annual Meeting of the Task Force of Governors for Climate and Forests – GCF Task Force -, which this year will be held in the city of Mérida, in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. The event is considered one of the most important spaces for discussions on subnational initiatives focused on the environment.

During the program, Governor Wilson Lima and representatives of the State present the initiatives of Amazonas for the environmental theme and appreciation of the population that lives in the protection areas. One of them is the Forest Guardians Program, the largest Payments for Environmental Services initiative in the world, which benefits more than 14,000 families in 28 Conservation Units.

In this edition, Wilson Lima also announces the Schools of the Forest project in Conservation Units, which will work on Environmental Education, sustainability and traditional knowledge in the public school system, to further improve the quality of life in protected areas. And yet, among other actions, it launches the regulation of 16 Fisheries Agreements (2019 to 2023), a policy implemented by Wilson Lima for the organization of rivers and lakes, in favor of the conservation of fishing resources, food security and the generation of income.

The initiatives are in line with the Manaus Action Plan – the Manaus Action Plan, or MAP, a letter prepared by the states during the meeting held in Amazonas in 2022, which brings together commitments and goals to reduce emissions and benefit their populations and the climate. Launched in the capital of Amazonas, the MAP is the guiding document for the task force’s actions.

“We are going to present the Guardians of the Forest, the largest payment program for environmental services on the planet, the advances we have made in our environmental services regulation law, the issue of carbon credits, which we managed to advance a lot, the presentation of the our School of the Forest, which will be in sustainable development reserves. We are going to present what we have been doing in our chains, mainly in our production chains”, listed Wilson Lima.

“The MAP was launched when Amazonas chaired the Task Force and, now, we will have the opportunity to exchange experiences, in addition to aligning what each state has done to implement it and how we can potentiate its effects collectively”, he said.

According to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, the great differential of this Plan is that it places social development and the construction of a new forest economy as fundamental strategies for environmental conversation.

The task force is made up of 39 states and provinces from 10 different countries. Together they hold about a third of the world’s rainforests. This union is considered the largest subnational environmental alliance. Governor Wilson Lima was president of the initiative from 2020 to 2022, when the governor of Yucatán, Mexico, Mauricio Vila Dosal, was elected to preside.

This year, the general theme of this meeting will be “The health of the planet, the health of all”. The discussions will be based on the Manaus Action Plan and the strategies that each state has developed for its implementation.

Amazonas’ agenda in Mérida – capital of Yucatán, began on Monday (6th), with a preliminary commitment to the open sessions of the Annual Meeting. On that occasion, designated delegates from Brazil, including Secretary Eduardo Taveira, participated in a meeting with the GCF Executive Committee, along with the Global Committee on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

This Tuesday (7) begins with a GCF Business Meeting, in a session attended by delegates from member states. On this occasion, each one will give an update on the advances in the implementation of the Manaus Action Plan in their regions, among other discussions. There will also be a session with governors of the task force, with the participation of Governor Wilson Lima.

On Wednesday (8), the sessions open to guests and the general public begin. Different working tables and panels will be held based on the MAP’s structuring axes: people and communities, knowledge, technology and innovation, financing, investment and the private sector, and government and public policies.

The first, “Opening dialogue: governance and public policy for sustainable economic development”, will have Wilson Lima as one of the panelists. The closing of the day will be a panel, with the participation of the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, on “Finance, Investments and the Private Sector: partnerships, challenges and opportunities”.
