Governor was part of the BloombergNEF Forum São Paulo 2024 program
Governor Wilson Lima highlighted, this Wednesday (13), the sustainable initiatives developed by the Government of Amazonas and the potential for investments in the state, such as the energy transition based on the use of natural gas, during his participation in the BloombergNEF (BNEF) event. Forum São Paulo 2024, held in the capital of São Paulo.
At the meeting, with the presence of BloombergNEF’s executive director, Jon Moore, and experts from this company that guides major investors around the world, the debate revolved around how Brazil can take advantage of its competitive advantages and natural resources to generate economic opportunities in sectors such as energy transition and sustainable development actions.
“We came to talk about the potential of the state of Amazonas and what paths we are taking to guarantee environmental preservation and, above all, guarantee income for our population and reduce poverty in the state”, highlighted Wilson Lima.
The governor of Amazonas was accompanied by the state secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, in a meeting moderated by the head of energy transition at BloombergNEF, Luiza Demoro.
On the occasion, the head of the largest Brazilian state explained how Amazonas has invested, for example, in the exploration of natural gas. In 2021, by sanctioning the Gas Law, the government broke the monopoly and established a new legal framework for the distribution and commercialization service, presenting itself as a new alternative economic matrix for the state, parallel to the Manaus Free Trade Zone.
Another potential of the state mentioned by the governor was the exploration of potash production, currently in the licensing phase. The city of Autazes (112 kilometers from the capital) has one of the largest potassium deposits in the world. The project’s goal is to supply, from 2027, 20% of Brazil’s potassium needs, which currently imports 98% of what it needs.
Wilson Lima assessed that the path and great challenge for sustainability and biodiversity preservation is to monetize the state’s potential and provide the fight against poverty through partnerships with communities that contribute to protecting the Amazon forest.
BloombergNEF and Amazon
BloombergNEF (BNEF) is a strategic research provider covering global commodity markets and the technologies driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. According to the company, Brazil has a fundamental role in this new scenario as the global demand for clean energy, green products, carbon credits and critical minerals increases.
In February, the governor had already met with company directors, in London (English capital), to present, for example, the Amazonas 2030 program, through which the State Government plans to achieve zero net deforestation through the sale of more of 800 million tons of carbon credits available for sale, with the potential to raise more than R$2.4 billion to invest in sustainable initiatives.
