Operation is the largest integrated and permanent task force held in the state for the repression of environmental crimes

Manaus (AM) – By expanding the presence of public agents in areas critical to environmental crimes in Amazonas, through actions such as the Tamoiotatá operation, deforestation alerts in the state dropped 55% in the first half of 2023, compared to the same period last year. Only 7.14% of the alerts occurred in areas directly managed by the State Government.

Data are from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) and indicate that, from January to June of this year, 553.41 km² of deforestation alerts were registered, compared to 1,235.98 km² in the same months of 2022. For Governor Wilson Lima, the drop in deforestation is the result of the presence of the State, mainly with the reinforcement of actions to combat environmental crimes.

“We are carrying out an integrated action in the southern region of Amazonas, especially during this period of the year. It is worth remembering that Operation Tamoiotatá is permanent, but we reinforce the force at this time when fires and deforestation increase”,

highlighted the governor when announcing, yesterday (10), the start of Operation Aceiro 2023, which integrates Tamoiotatá and expands firefighter personnel and vehicles in firefighting actions in this time of severe drought in the state.

Results

Since 2021, Operation Tamoiotatá unites Amazonas’ environmental and public security forces to prevent and combat illegal deforestation.

“We achieved a significant reduction in deforestation in the first half compared to the previous half. The entire Amazon had an important reduction of 33%, but only the state of Amazonas reached this result”,

said the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira.

Operation Firebreak 2023

The Amazonas Military Fire Brigade (CBMAM) sent a troop with 74 military firefighters and 10 vehicles to fight forest fires in the south of the state, as part of Operation Aceiro 2023, which will concentrate its efforts in the municipalities of Humaitá, Apuí, Boca do Acre, Lábrea and Manicoré, known as the “arc of fire”.

Most of the affected areas belong to the Federal Government, so the Government of Amazonas will receive support from firefighters from the National Public Security Force to assist in firefighting actions in these regions.

The action counts on the participation of the National Secretariat for Public Security (Senasp), civil brigade members, the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema), the Amazon Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources (Ibama ).
