CPMI will denounce Mauro Cid to the STF for failing to answer questions in testimony

The president of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI), Arthur Maia (União Brasil-BA), announced during the session this Tuesday (11) that he will present a complaint to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid for refusing to answer questions not protected by habeas corpus.

During his testimony to the CPMI, Mauro Cid remained silent, even in the face of objective questions, such as his age and the number of children he has, which caused irritation among government members. They argued that the former aide-de-camp of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was exceeding the limits of the protection granted by the Court, which guarantees him the right not to answer questions that may incriminate him.

In response to the statement by Deputy Jandira Feghali (PCdoB-RJ), Maia stated that the CPMI will file a complaint against Cid with the STF for not having respected the Court’s decision on which questions he should answer to parliamentarians, which may result in additional sanctions .

In an official note, the Army reported that it instructed Mauro Cid to attend the CPI wearing his uniform, considering that he was summoned to deal with matters related to his role in the Force. At the beginning of his testimony, the suspect made a point of highlighting his position as an adjutant as a role assigned by the Army. The military faces eight investigations at the Supreme Court, which are being explored by government supporters in the commission of inquiry.

These inquiries include the suspected orchestration of a coup d’état on January 8, involvement in protests considered undemocratic in 2019, alleged concealment of Saudi jewelry presented to Bolsonaro, fraud in vaccination cards, the spread of false news during the pandemic, cooperation with the so-called Bolsonarist digital militias, payment in cash of expenses of former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro and the leak of a secret investigation that investigated alleged fraud at the polls in the 2018 elections.

Previously, before the testimony, the CPMI approved, through an agreement, the breach of secrecy of Cid and two other military allies of Bolsonaro: Silvinei Vasques, former director general of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), and Colonel Jean Laland Junior. In addition, more than 120 requests for information, financial reports and breaches of confidentiality were also approved.
