Merida (Mexico) – Governor Wilson Lima reinforced, during his presence at the 13th Annual Meeting of the Task Force of Governors for Climate and Forests (GCF Task Force), in Mexico, that the state of Amazonas has several business opportunities for investors, and guaranteed cooperation of trade in bioeconomy. The manager of the largest Brazilian state highlighted that he has been seeking partners for investments in areas with a focus on Sustainability, Tourism and Technologies.

“We have been working a lot with those countries that are interested in making investments in the Amazon, we have been working with those countries that are interested in helping us with this conservation issue”,

said Governor Wilson Lima, who chaired the GCF Task Force until last year, bringing a meeting of the group to the capital of Amazonas in March 2022.

During the meeting, the governor signed a Memorandum of Understanding to intensify cooperation for the trade of bioeconomy products. An internal working group dedicated exclusively to the bioeconomy was also created and, through it, an Action Plan should be prepared to achieve specific goals, in an integrated manner, by the end of 2023.

In the document, also signed by the other members of the Task Force, the States undertake to encourage investments and the creation of jobs associated with the development of the bioeconomy, as well as to explore financing mechanisms to increase the national and international dialogue on measures to leverage the sector.

“We are signing a memorandum of understanding to be able to expand this scope of the Chamber of Commerce and make other products, mainly from the bioeconomy, available in other markets and mainly in those markets where a better value is guaranteed for this product”,

explained Wilson Lima.

He guaranteed that the Government of Amazonas has been working with the communities, especially those in Sustainable Development Reserves, offering technology and financing to guarantee the quality of the products.

‘Investing in the Amazon is investing in the future’

During the event, Wilson Lima presented investment opportunities focused on sustainable development, such as the Guardians of the Forest Program, the largest Payments for Environmental Services initiative in the world, which serves more than 14,000 families in 28 Conservation Units (CUs).

The governor also spoke about community-based tourism in the state, which currently has 27 inns in Sustainable Development Reserves (RDS). The search is for qualification, organization and support to improve the structure of this tourist activity.

Another highlight in terms of investment in the Amazon is carbon credits. Wilson Lima exposed the regulations of the State Environmental Services Law and informed that the Government of Amazonas has more than 809.6 million tons of carbon equivalent (tCO2e) for sale.

The funding potential, according to him, is up to R$ 2.4 billion. “Reducing poverty and conserving forests is possible”, highlighted Governor Wilson Lima, adding that “investing in Amazonas is investing in the future”, reinforcing a key phrase that appears in the information material delivered during the event, with a summary of the potential for business in the state.

Infrastructure, technology and education

In the area of infrastructure, the Government of Amazonas is working to expand the Água Boa Project, which supplies rural communities with quality water. The service already operates in 20 municipalities and 33 communities, benefiting more than 205,000 people. The goal is to reach 800 thousand.

Also in this area, the state seeks partnerships to implement public transport with clean energy, a goal of the Wilson Lima government in the Race to Zero initiative. The State has already started the process of acquiring electric buses for the capital, Manaus.

Another demand is the search for partnerships to expand the internet offer in the interior of the Amazonian Amazon. Connected by optical fiber, 12 cities already have digital services. The Conecta Amazonas program will bring free internet to 30 rural communities.

In Education, Governor Wilson Lima announced, during the meeting with the governors, the “Escola da Floresta” project, which will take quality education from the state public network to protected areas, focusing on Environmental Education, sustainability and traditional knowledge, in addition to the quest to improve the quality of life in these areas.

Another item of education that has been a reference and whose expansion the government is already working on is bilingual education, which increases opportunities for students from the public network. The search is for partnerships with embassies and consulates to increase the offer of this type of education, which already has cooperation to offer bilingual education in English, Japanese, French and Spanish.

In the area of technologies, there are opportunities to expand the structured support policy for Science, Technology and Innovation (CT&I) and the Plan to implement the High Performance Center, aimed at qualification in CT&I. The State of Amazonas Research Support Foundation (Fapeam) has 73 investment programs and more than 10,000 supported research projects.

green economy

In the economic area, Governor Wilson Lima said that Amazonas has the Manaus Free Trade Zone, the most successful economic model in Amazonas, with more than 600 factories installed, which gather tax incentives, generating more than 100 thousand jobs that help in the preservation from the Amazon.

Another area with business potential is in the bioeconomy. An example is the Agroindustrial Pole of Rio Preto da Eva (57 kilometers from Manaus), being structured for the industrialization of fruits, natural extracts and herbal medicines. There is still potential for projects for the sustainable processing of wood, fish and mineral goods in the interior.

Finally, the governor highlighted the Natural Gas market, citing the approval of the Gas Regulatory Framework, attracting new investors to the state. Wilson Lima said that this is the third best legislation in Brazil for exploring the natural gas market, presenting a lower cost of the product, stimulating economic and industrial growth, generating jobs and income in a sustainable way.
