“We have to fight for our brothers inside”, says prisoner from 8/1 upon leaving Papuda

Five prisoners from 8/1 who were granted provisional release after the death of businessman Cleriston Pereira da Cunha left the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, this Wednesday (23), with a feeling of gratitude and indignation. “Everyone is here. Thank you, guys!” said Brasília resident Tiago dos Santos Ferreira, thrilled to be reunited with his family after almost 11 months in prison.

“But I’ll tell you something,” he continued. “We have to fight for our brothers who are inside because they are feeling abandoned!”, shouted the boy in 28 years when friends gave him a lunch box to eat. “What’s the point of me eating this here if my brothers are eating sour food in that place?”, she asked.

According to lawyer Rannie Karlla, who represents Tiago and other prisoners from the 8th of January, “there is nothing that justifies the arrest and the suffering that these people are going through, because they did not commit any crime”, he stated in an interview with Gazeta do Povo .

“For there to be a coup d’état, there needs to be an armed group, and the people from 8/1 carried flags and didn’t even know each other, so they weren’t even a group”, explained the jurist, stating that they have been treated as “the worst criminals”, without human rights and with great difficulty in defending themselves. “We are carrying out all the legal procedures, but, unfortunately, there had to be a death for them to get the process going”, citing that “there is no harmony between the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the other judicial powers”.

Favorable opinion since August

According to the lawyer, Tiago had a favorable opinion from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) since the end of August to receive provisional release, as happened with Cleriston, but the case was not analyzed. “And his mental health was so shaken, with spikes of anger and despair, that he no longer wanted to talk to anyone, not even lawyers,” she says.

Now, he will wear an electronic ankle bracelet with time rules for leaving home and returning, the obligation to remain at home on weekends, and to appear at the forum every Monday. “Situations that greatly restrict the individual’s routine and do not allow the person to work freely”, points out Rannie.

Even so, the family is grateful for the opportunity to be with Tiago again. “I’m very grateful to God”, reported mother Ivanilde, when she received the news about her son’s provisional freedom. “These permits were supposed to come out sooner, so that Cleriston could also be with his family, but even so, this is now a blessing”, reported the woman, after staying 11 months without seeing her son.

In addition to Tiago, the arrests of Vitório Campos da Silva were also revoked (72 years), Jaime Junkes (67 years), Jairo de Oliveira Costa (44 years) and the young Wellington Luiz Firmino.
