The last day of the Wajãpi tribe’s Olympic games, around the Tumucumaque Mountains National Park, in Pedra Branca do Amapari, was marked by rituals of dances and songs and prayers of thanks from the indigenous people. For three days, 1,600 Indians from 40 villages participated in the event promoted by the Pedra Branca do Amapari City Council.
The program included competitions that became real attractions for the public who attended the first edition of the Wajãpi Olympics held in Aldeia Aramirã. The participating athletes competed for titles in football, endurance running, power cable, spear throwing, archery, log running and volleyball.
The closing took place on Sunday afternoon (26) with the grand final of field football, followed by celebrations that marked the integration between the villages and made spectators aware of indigenous manifestations and traditions.
According to the municipal Sports and Leisure coordinator, Pablo Brito, the event made clear Pedra Branca’s ability to be included in the state’s agenda of major events. “It was a beautiful party, with its peculiarities, and served as a learning experience for us in relation to the structure, showing that we are capable of hosting more sporting events”, stated the coordinator.
