An Atlético de Madrid fan was detained for hurling racist insults at a child wearing the uniform of Real Madrid’s Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior before the derby between the teams on September 24.
“The detainee attacked the minor, who was on the lap of a relative, because she was wearing the uniform of a Brazilian player from the rival team,” Spanish police said in a statement.
He “approached the girl who was wearing a rival team’s shirt and began hurling racist insults and death threats,” the note adds.
The incident happened on September 24, before the sixth round derby of the Spanish championship at the Metropolitano stadium, which Atlético de Madrid won 3-1.
In October, the aunt of the 8-year-old black girl told Cadena Ser radio that the two were victims of racist abuse by fans of the Frente Atlético group near the stadium.
She said the girl was attacked because she was wearing a uniform belonging to Vinicius Junior, a Real Madrid striker who became the focus of the fight against racism in Spanish football last season after suffering insults in some stadiums.
The police stated that the detainee “even hit the family member who was holding her on the arm twice”, before other fans intervened, who prevented the attack from continuing.
The man was detained as “allegedly responsible for a hate crime”.
The Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation in October for a possible hate crime, following a complaint from LaLiga.
Real Madrid invited the girl to watch the club’s next match in the Spanish league, when the team defeated Las Palmas 2-0.
