Striker Vinicius Junior, 22, from Real Madrid, said in a new publication on social networks, this Monday afternoon (22), that cases of racism in Spanish football are not isolated and questioned why offenders and clubs are not punished .

“It always falls into ‘isolated cases’, ‘a fan’. No, they are not isolated cases. They are continuous episodes spread across several cities in Spain”, declared Vinicius. “Now I ask: how many of these racists had their names and photos displayed on websites?”

“What’s missing to criminalize these people? And to punish the clubs sportingly? Why don’t the sponsors charge La Liga? Don’t the televisions bother to broadcast this barbarism every weekend?”, he continued.

The Brazilian was expelled this Sunday (21) after being the target of racist insults uttered against him by Valencia fans. The teams faced each other at the Mestalla stadium, for the 35th round of the Spanish Championship – the team from the capital was defeated by 1-0. The case generated outrage around the world.

Images show the moment when the Brazilian national team player faces fans of the home team close to the bottom line. The situation caused an agglomeration between athletes from both teams and the match was interrupted for a moment. Only the Brazilian was expelled, with interference from the VAR (video assistant referee).

In a message on social networks after the game, the striker stated that racism “is normal” in La Liga and signaled that he could leave Spain as a result of these episodes. In a statement, the organization said it had requested the images to investigate “alleged racist insults directed at Vinicius Jr.”

Javier Tebas, president of the league, criticized Vinicius’ positioning. “We tried to explain what La Liga can do in cases of racism, but you didn’t show up on any of the dates agreed s[…],” tweeted Thebes.

The representative of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, said he recognizes the existence of a problem with racism in the country.

This Sunday, the insults began around 15 minutes into the second half, when the Brazilian was fouled and called “mono” (monkey, in Spanish) by opposing fans. The cursing continued, to the point where the stadium announcer intervened asking for an end to the screams, so that the match would not be suspended.

In addition, after Vinicius identified one of the fans and denounced him to the arbitration with gestures, players from both teams exchanged pushes. The Brazilian received a “rear naked choke” from striker Hugo Duro and, as he broke away, hit the Valencia player in the face – the action was punished with a red card.

At the end of the match, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti again came to Vinicius’ defense and classified what happened as “unacceptable”.

The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, said this Monday (22) that the Brazilian government, together with the Spanish government, had called on the Public Ministry of the European country to initiate an investigation against La Liga, after the episode of racism against the player Vinicius Junior.

Anielle Franco also added that he “goes for it” in the Spanish league, so that the case involving the Brazilian and all other cases of racism are investigated and penalized. And she added that La Liga’s record is not good.

Also this Monday morning, the Brazilian government released a note repudiating the cases of racism that the player has been suffering “repeatedly”. And he appealed to Spanish authorities, the Spanish federation and FIFA to take action.
