The main entrance to the Planalto Palace was unguarded for 45 minutes after police and military personnel from the BGP (Presidential Guard Battalion) lifted the blockade at the site during the January 8 attacks, reveal videos from the internal security circuit of the Executive headquarters.

The images of the security circuit were released after repeal of secrecy determined by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court). The recordings also show a major from the GSI (Institutional Security Office) interacting with protesters on the floor of the presidential office, as well as an intruder who felt comfortable withdrawing money at an ATM on the same floor.

According to the videos, Bolsonarist vandals who had already entered the Planalto through other places opened the main door of the building – which facilitated access by scammers and depredation.

The threat to invade the Plateau began around 3:00 pm, when the National Congress was already taken over by the coup leaders and a group of vandals confronted military police in the palace’s parking lot.

Around 20 police and military personnel from the BGP then set up a roadblock at 3:11 pm in front of the main gate that gives access to the Planalto. In the distance, Bolsonaristas threw stones, cones and fire extinguishers.

With the advance of the coup plotters and the entry of vandals from other places, the PM and the BGP undid the blockade at 3:26 pm — a moment when, without security, criminals opened the door of the Planalto Palace from the inside and called the other radical Bolsonarists to invade the seat of the Executive.

In the next 45 minutes, the scenes captured by the camera at the entrance to the Planalto register a series of depredations. A man wearing a Brazilian national team shirt picked up an iron stick and struck the X-ray machine; another threw chairs off the building.

Most of the vandals used their cell phones to make recordings and livestreams.

The situation at the entrance to the Planalto was only controlled at 4:01 pm, when the BGP advanced with the military in line against the vandals. The main means used to disperse the coup plotters was tear gas, without the need for direct confrontation.

Only at 4:43 pm did two groups of around one hundred BGP soldiers leave the parking lot reserved for the presidential convoy on their way to the outer area of the Planalto.

The images reveal the low security staff on the day of the invasion. In addition to the lack of shock police from the PM of the DF, the Battalion of the Presidential Guard only had 36 soldiers in the Planalto Palace at the beginning of the invasions.

Only after the palace was taken did the GSI receive reinforcement from the BGP: First two companies were sent, with 173 soldiers, and then a group with another 120.

There are no figures officially confirmed by the PM of the DF on the staff that had been employed at the Esplanada dos Ministérios on January 8th.

Part of the images was initially released by CNN last week. The videos led to the downfall of Gonçalves Dias, then GSI minister —the first resignation of the Lula government 3. The general had to testify to the PF last Friday (21), as did nine other GSI officials who appear in the images.

GDias, as he is called, also appears in the images, on the floor of the presidential office. At first, he uses a metal structure and tape to block access to the fourth floor via the stairs, then checks that Lula’s office doors are closed.

Finding protesters further on the presidential floor, the general points to them to leave the place, which they do. Dias claims that the objective was to take the invaders to the second floor of the Planalto, where they would be arrested.

The same videos now released show Major José Eduardo Natale de Paula Pereira, who was the security coordinator for the facilities in Planalto, interacting for half an hour with demonstrators on the floor of the presidential office.

Pereira appears in the camera footage from the third floor of Planalto talking and giving water to the vandals. At other times, he circulates on the phone when they had already invaded rooms on the presidential floor and even witnesses a scammer stealing a fire extinguisher.

To CNN Brasil, after the broadcaster released images of him giving water to the demonstrators, the major said he acted to “contain damage”.

“It was to do damage containment, to prevent people from entering the president’s office, which would be the last line,” he said. According to the report, he would have said that he had not yet made arrests precisely because he was alone in front of the vandals.

Protesters circulate for just over an hour in the most restricted area of the presidential floor, until they are completely removed from the site. It all took place between 3:20 pm and about 4:31 pm.

Security flaws during the coup attacks also allowed an attacker to calmly withdraw money from an ATM on the 3rd floor of Planalto.

The images show the man at 3:54 pm in front of the machine, accessing his bank account through biometrics (thumb), withdrawing the amount of money and counting the bills twice, before putting it in his pocket.
