The vice-president of the Liberal Party (PL), federal deputy Captain Augusto (PL-SP), released this Saturday (10) a note on the latest events involving the party’s national president, Valdemar Costa Neto. Amid the repercussions about Valdemar’s future in the party, Augusto reiterated his unwavering support for the party president.
“In light of the recent events that resulted in the preventive arrest of our president Valdemar, I would like to express our unwavering respect and support for him, regardless of the current circumstances”, says the note (read in full below).
In the document, the party also states that “arrested or released, Valdemar continues to be the president of our party, and it is up to him to have the official word on these events.” Costa Neto was arrested last Thursday (8), as part of the operation Tempus Veritatistriggered by the Federal Police.
Despite not being subject to arrest, Valdemar was detained for alleged illegal possession of a weapon. On that occasion, the PL chief was arrested in the act and was detained at the Federal Police superintendence, in Brasília. Also this Saturday (10), a few hours after Captain Augusto’s demonstration, the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes granted provisional freedom to Valdemar
The decision came after an opinion from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). According to the agency, Valdemar’s age, which is 74 years old, and the fact that the crime was not committed with violence or serious threat, could favor his release.
