Vice appointed by Bolsonaro to Nunes charges Tarcísio – 02/12/2024 – Panel

Appointed by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to be deputy to Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) in the 2024 elections, Colonel Ricardo Mello Araújo published a video on his social networks in which he demands a position from right-wing leaders regarding the Federal Police operation which targets an alleged coup attempt to keep the former president in power.

The colonel especially highlighted the role of governors elected with Bolsonaro’s support and tagged several people in the video, such as the former president and his children.

The only governor noted in the publication was Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), who has not publicly expressed himself on the issue to date. He was on an official trip to Europe last week. Jorginho Mello (PL), governor of Santa Catarina, has been praised by Bolsonarists for having criticized the Federal Police investigation.

At the beginning of the video, the colonel questions the arrest of Valdemar da Costa Neto, president of the PL, and says that, as a police officer, he arrested several offenders for illegal possession of a weapon and they were released on the same day.

“I would like to hear from our right-wing representatives. We have municipal elections coming up, and the great right-wing leaders have not spoken out. Where are the deputies, senators, governors? Governors have a huge responsibility, many were elected behind President Bolsonaro’s back” , said Mello Araújo, who was commander of Rota and president of Ceagesp.

“These governors need to speak out, so that we can understand whether they are right or wrong. Because the people are a bit lost and need to hear the voice of those who voted for them. Where are the people on the right speaking out?”, he concluded.

As the Panel showed, Mello Araújo’s name encounters resistance among Nunes’ allies and within the PL itself. The “root wing” of Bolsonaro’s party believes that the colonel’s name could harm the mayor’s vote in peripheral regions of the city.
