Veganism in MMA

Athletes’ nutrition is usually associated with a combination of meals rich in protein sources consisting of meat, eggs and milk. However, many names active in the sport, including in fights, started to escape this “rule” with the exclusion of foods that derive from animal origin from the diet, that is, they follow the line of veganism.

According to the English association “The Vegan Society”, the vegan concept aims to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, the various forms of exploitation and cruelty against animals, whether for food, clothing or for any other purpose.

For culinary influencer Bruna Perissinotto, the vegan philosophy still addresses many questions regarding the adequate intake of vitamins, amino acids and proteins in meals with plant-based foods. She points out that the public that does not follow the proposal has many questions, but some notes are also part of many individuals who practice veganism.

“Following a vegan diet does not impact the conditional form of an athlete or the average person. It is about a nutritious way of life. The options on the vegetable menu contain vitamins and are important for everyday eating. I am not nutritionist, but I know that vegetables have vitamin B12, an important type for those who practice sports”, points out the kitchen-loving influencer.

Within the enveloping world of MMA, names like Mac Danzig, Alex Caceres, Jake Shields and the brothers Nick and Nate Diaz are personalities who prove that it is possible to follow this lifestyle and compete at a high level in the sports category in which they act as athletes.

“I did some studies on this lifestyle and in the case of vegan athletes, I see that there is a need for them to maintain a more varied diet and consume vitamins, minerals and photochemical antioxidants. This is a positive point of the vegan diet, because the consumption of vegetables eliminates more toxins than those who eat meat or derivatives”, concludes Bruna Perissinotto.
