The president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, said in a statement to the Federal Police, this Thursday (2), that he used a metaphor when declaring that “everybody” had a coup document at home. Minister Alexandre de Moraes accepted the PF’s request to hear the party leader.

According to the document, obtained by the metropolises, to police authorities Valdemar Costa Neto said he had received “two or three proposals” from the so-called “draft of the coup”. The president of the PL stated that the documents were not identified, and that he “simply ground” the texts. In addition, he denied having brought the papers “to the knowledge of the party”, nor having discussed the matter with then-president Jair Bolsonaro, who was affiliated with the party, or with other people.

He also stated that he had received two or three similar proposals. One of them was delivered by a lawyer at the airport, but she does not know her name or whether, in fact, she was a lawyer. Valdemar Costa Neto also denied having knowledge of who distributed the documents and stated that such pieces “didn’t make any sense”, which indicates preparation by people without experience.

The leader of the Liberal Party reported that, by declaring that several people had the so-called “draft of the coup”, he used a “force of expression”. He also claimed not to know the origin, context of production or who requested the construction of the document.

Valdemar denied having any copy of the documents and, when asked about the reason for shredding them, feared being considered as favorable to the coup. The president of the PL was also asked what attitudes the party took on the draft. He claimed not to have taken the documents seriously and that, therefore, he never took them to the legend.

Relationship with Anderson Torres and change of power

In the statement, the President of the PL denied having a relationship with Anderson Torres or participating in meetings with the former Minister of Justice. So he claimed not to have any contact with the high command of the Military Police of the Federal District. He also denied having met with any instigator of the coup acts on January 8th.

Asked at the hearing about how the matter of alternating power was handled, Valdemar said that “it never crossed his mind that he would lose the election”, referring to Bolsonaro’s dispute against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for the Presidency of the Republic. The president of the PL admits that there was a notion of possible defeat in the first round, but not in the second.

Recently, Valdemar gave an interview to the newspaper O Globo and stated that drafts with a coup-like content, such as the one found by the police at the residence of former minister Anderson Torres, were common among the circle close to former president Jair Bolsonaro.
