USP (University of São Paulo) filed a protocol with the state department of education in São Paulo with the intention of offering a serial entrance exam as a way to enter its undergraduate courses.

The exam must be applied to students during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of high school in public schools starting this year.

Called Provão Paulista, the project is still trying to join Unicamp (State University of Campinas) and Unesp (State University of São Paulo).

For the first edition, with entry in 2024, USP plans to offer 1,500 vacancies, of which 555 will be allocated to black, brown and indigenous students.

The intention of the managers of the São Paulo university is to attract students from the public network. Aluísio Segurado, dean of graduation, says that only 16% of the 400,000 students who completed public high school in 2022 participated in the Enem (National High School Examination) and 8.7% in Fuvest.

To guarantee the permanence of these students at USP, the administration Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) considers offering scholarships of R$ 800 per month. Paid internship positions are also negotiated —initially BRL 2,100 per month— for students of the 28 degree courses offered at the institution.

According to Dean Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, negotiations with the government of São Paulo should continue and details of the project, such as preparation of tests, will be presented at a meeting scheduled for August 1st.

This Tuesday (27), USP climbed 30 positions in the QS World university ranking and is now considered the best higher education institution in Latin America, ranking 85th in the world.

In the previous edition, from 2023, the São Paulo university was at the 115 mark and was the third best placed in Latin America, behind UBA (University of Buenos Aires) and Unam (National Autonomous University of Mexico).
