Uruguayan emerges as ‘the’ gringo striker of the Brazilian – 06/22/2023 – The World is a Ball

With the Brazilian Championship approaching its third, a name emerges as a candidate for the best foreign striker in the competition.

That name is not that of Argentine Germán Cano, 35, top scorer of the 2022 Brazilian Championship, with 26 goals, nor that of his compatriot Jonathan Calleri, 29, who scored 18 times in the last edition.

Disputing his first Brazilian, the Uruguayan Thiago Borbas, 21, who is not even Bragantino’s starter, has scored goals with little time on the field, and very important goals for the team from the interior of São Paulo.

If the team from Bragança Paulista, which plays this Thursday (22) against Flamengo for the 11th of 38 rounds, is in the classification zone for the next Copa Sudamericana, it is due to two of Borbas’ four goals in the championship .

The striker has played in eight of Bragantino’s ten games so far, always coming off the bench, and was responsible for the team’s equalizing goal in two away games.

Against Cuiabá, in April in Mato Grosso, he scored in the 41st minute of the second half, and the match ended 1-1. Against Grêmio, in May in Porto Alegre, he sent the ball into the net in the added time of the second stage, enacting the 3 to 3.

He also scored in the 2-0 victory against Athletico-PR and in the 2-1 loss to Fluminense.

The four goals are twice as many as the famous Luis Suárez, 36 (four World Cups under his belt), scored for Grêmio in the same eight matches.

What is impressive is that Borbas played an average of just 27 minutes per game, managing to score a goal every 55 minutes on the pitch.

In comparison with Cano (three goals in 11 matches) and Calleri (four goals in ten matches), who are the other top scorers in this year’s Brazilian Nationals, Borbas records much higher efficiency.

The Fluminense striker took 294 minutes (almost four games) to send the ball into the opponent’s goal, and the São Paulo striker, 199 minutes (more than two games). The two played, on average, 80 minutes per match, or triple the time offered to Borbas.

The main scorer of the Brazilian, with eight goals in nine games, is Tiquinho Soares, from leader Botafogo, who scores a goal every 92 minutes – close to one per game, on average. It took Suárez 354 minutes to score each of his goals.

The good performance of Borbas, who is a former top scorer for River Plate (not Argentina’s, but his namesake in Uruguay), caught the attention of coach Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa.

The Argentine, who recently took charge of the Uruguayan national team, listed Borbas in his initial squad, for the friendlies in recent days against Nicaragua (4-1) and Cuba (2-0). It was the 1.81 m and 69 kg player’s first time in his country’s senior squad.

Born in Montevideo, he was able to play in his hometown in those two duels (both at the Centenario stadium), and he started as a starter in the second. He failed, however, to score a goal in those games.

Borbas intends to resume the top scorer phase on his return to Bragantino. For this, it will have the support of the fans, since the team will play four consecutive games at home: Flamengo and Goiás (for the Brazilian), Tacuary, from Paraguay (for the Copa Sudamericana) and Juventus (for the Copa Paulista).

Now with Uruguay’s selectable status, it is possible that Bragantino’s coach, the Portuguese Pedro Caixinha, will give him more minutes to show what he is capable of.
