University of Manaus celebrates greater coverage of indigenous university students

For more than three decades, the university has engaged in social actions aimed at indigenous communities.
The Lutheran University of Brazil (Ulbra) in Manaus, recognized as the private university with the largest indigenous representation in Amazonas, has been an example of dedication to cultural and ethnic diversity, evidenced by its expressive indigenous academic community. In a continuous effort to recognize and honor the rich history and diversity of indigenous peoples, Ulbra Manaus celebrates the National Day of the Struggle of Indigenous Peoples, this Wednesday (7).
For more than three decades, Ulbra has been a meeting point for indigenous students looking for quality education in an environment that respects and values their cultural identities. This is the case of Sabrina Vilhena, 29, from the Mura ethnic group.
“I’m in my 4th period of Nursing here at Ulbra, and I’m the first woman in my village to attend higher education. When I came here, I saw everything about my people at the University, I felt at home, and it was the highlight for making the decision to enroll,”
he said.
The university is proud to be one of the main private higher education institutions to welcome a significant number of indigenous academics in Manaus.
Recognizing the rich historical diversity of indigenous peoples, Ulbra Manaus maintains spaces within the university CAMPUS that preserve not only nature, but also respect local culture. With green areas and a longhouse built between blocks C and D, the university offers a conducive environment for learning and respect for indigenous traditions.
Furthermore, the institution actively promotes regionality and cultural integration through initiatives such as Sarau das Nações, an event with dances, music and indigenous fashion, becoming a vivid example of the commitment to valuing and promoting the cultural diversity of the Amazon region. .
For Ismael Munduruku, Chief of Parque das Tribos, the partnership with the institution was very important, “I say that Ulbra is without a doubt the university of indigenous peoples. This year my wife won a 100% scholarship to study, and Ulbra is tirelessly within our community”he declared.
February 7th marks the National Day of Struggle of Indigenous Peoples, a date that recalls the year 1756, when the Guarani indigenous leader Sepé Tiaraju passed away. He was a prominent figure among the Seven Peoples of the Missions and led a revolt against Portuguese and Spanish colonizers. This year, indigenous people opposed the Treaty of Madrid, which aimed to divide Brazilian territory between Portugal and Spain.
The indigenous people defended their territories, currently located in central-eastern Paraguay, northwestern Argentina, southern Brazil and northern Uruguay, led by Sepé Tiaraju, who became a symbol of resistance.
The National Day of Struggle for Indigenous Peoples was established by Law No. 11,696, of 2008. Almost three centuries after Sepé’s death, the battle for the right to land and recognition and respect for their cultures continues. On February 5, 2020, the federal government signed a bill that authorizes mining activities and electricity generation on indigenous lands, further intensifying this debate.
On this National Day of Struggle for Indigenous Peoples, the Rector of Ulbra Manaus, Dr. Evandro Brandão, reaffirms the institution’s ongoing commitment to the appreciation, respect and preservation of indigenous cultures.
“In the face of indigenous peoples, Ulbra has the responsibility to carry out extension and research projects to establish more effective communication with these communities. From this interaction, we seek to provide a better quality of life in joint, community and cooperative work with the indigenous communities of Amazonas, especially the city of Manaus, as is the case of Parque das Tribos”,
