Unionists see resumption of ties on Lula’s trip – 07/04/2023 – Panel SA

The presidents of the three largest trade union centrals confirmed their presence in Lula’s entourage to China next week.

In addition to Sergio Nobre (CUT) and Miguel Torres (Força Sindical), who were part of the list of participants in the visit canceled at the end of last month, Ricardo Patah, from UGT, is also going.

For João Carlos Gonçalves, Juruna, secretary general of Força Sindical, the trip is one more sign of the rapprochement with the top of the government, after a long period in which they stopped accompanying the presidential entourages. “Businessmen were always invited, workers were not. It is a debt that balances itself”, says Juruna.

Ricardo Patah says that the representation of workers has not participated in a trip like this for a decade. He says he wants to get to know the system of online trading companies, such as Shein.

For Miguel Torres, the focus of the visit will be a meeting with the national federation of trade unions in China. The relationship with the Asian entity intensified in 2021, when the Chinese offered resources to combat Covid to the Forum of Union Centrals.
