The rectory of Unicamp (State University of Campinas) says it will open administrative proceedings against a professor who allegedly threatened students at the institution with a knife and pepper spray. The episode occurred this Tuesday morning (3).
In a statement, the university says it repudiates the acts of violence carried out on the Barão Geraldo campus, in the interior of São Paulo, and asks for calm and serenity so that conflicts can be resolved appropriately.
“The conduct of the professor, in addition to the police investigation launched, will be investigated through appropriate administrative procedures and the appropriate measures will be taken”, states the rectory.
“It should also be noted that the rectory has been warning that the proliferation of acts of violence with political justification or motivation is not healthy for coexistence between different people”, he continues.
As shown by Sheet, the confrontation began after students entered the teacher’s room to communicate the decision to strike, which took place this Tuesday and was approved by students from at least 23 courses at Unicamp. The teacher then allegedly pulled out a knife and pepper spray.
“The teacher grabbed my arm, threw me to the floor, raised a knife at me, coming at me,” said student Gustavo Bispo, member of the DCE (Central Student Directory), in a video published on social media. “A teacher tried to stab a student,” he said.
In another part of the video shared by the central directory, it is possible to see the moment in which the teacher attacks one of the students with a knife in his hand. A young man clashes with the teacher in the hallway of one of the institution’s buildings, and two security guards intervene.
According to the DCE, the professor, whose name was not disclosed, works at the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (IMECC) at Uniacmp. The teacher and the two attacked students were taken to the 1st Police District of Campinas.
The strike that takes place this Tuesday challenges the privatization of state bodies and the precariousness of state universities in São Paulo.
