Ukrainians in Brazil ask Lula government not to betray them – 04/16/2023 – Panel

The main organization of the Ukrainian community in Brazil declared in a note that the Russian Foreign Minister, Serguei Lavrov, who begins his visit this Monday (17), “represents an aggressor country of another sovereign country”, in violation of the UN Charter.

“Minister Lavrov represents its president, Vladimir Putin, who has an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for kidnapping Ukrainian children from the territory of Ukraine and taking them to Russia”, says the Central Representation Ucraniano Brasileira, in a signed text. by its president, Vitório Sorotiuk.

Lavrov will have meetings at Itamaraty and possibly meet President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has been seeking to build a group of mediators to end the conflict. The petista has irritated the US and the Europeans, however, for statements that were seen as favorable to the Russian side.

The note asks the Brazilian government “not to betray the hopes” of the approximately 600,000 Brazilians of Ukrainian origin. “The body, soul and blood of Ukraine are part of Brazil and the Brazilian government is expected to correspond”, he says.

It also demands that the country pressure Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine. “Brazil must demand that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine, as international relations must be carried out in good faith,” he says.

The note also sends a veiled message to Lula, who in an interview last week said that Ukraine may have to cede part of its territories in a peace negotiation.

“It is positive that Brazil seeks and intercedes for peace, but the only one who has the authority to speak about the conditions of peace and the integrity of its territory is the Ukrainian people and their government”, he says.
